Atotin – 10 – What is it?

Working of Atorvastatin

Atorvastatin acts on the liver to stop it making cholesterol. This lowers your blood cholesterol level. For the first 12 months on this medicine, you’ll be offered a couple of routine tests to make sure your liver is working normally.

What are Statins?

Statins are a group of medicines that can help lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. LDL cholesterol is often referred to as “bad cholesterol”, and statins reduce the production of it inside the liver. Statins can also be used to treat familial hypercholesterolaemia. This is an inherited condition caused by a genetic fault that leads to high cholesterol levels, even in people who have a generally healthy lifestyle.

Who should not take Atonin?

Atorvastatin isn’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as there’s no firm evidence its safe. It’s best to stop taking atorvastatin at least 3 months before you start trying for a baby. If you become pregnant while taking atorvastatin, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor.

Atonin is not recommended for patients with liver problems; muscle pain or weakness; kidney disease; diabetes; a thyroid disorder; or those who drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily.

Atorvastatin along with diet

Atorvastatin is used together with diet to lower blood levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL), to increase levels of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL), and to lower triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood).

Avoid eating foods high in fat or cholesterol, or atorvastatin will not be as effective. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can raise triglyceride levels and may increase your risk of liver damage. Grapefruit may interact with atorvastatin and lead to unwanted side effects. Avoid drinking more than 1 liter of grapefruit juice while taking atorvastatin.

Drugs which are dangerous while taking along with Atorvastatin

Some drugs taken along with atorvastatin can increase your risk of serious muscle problems, and it is very important that you and your doctor knows if you are using any of them. Antibiotic or antifungal medicine; birth control pills; other cholesterol-lowering medication; heart medication; or medicine to treat HIV or AIDS.
